How to recognise and care for oily skin

Oily skin types can be a little bit of hard work! They look shinier than other skin types and pores can appear enlarged (a bit like the skin of an orange). Often, they might have breakouts and blemishes but not always.

All this might not sound very desirable but, actually, when is properly cared for it is the preferred skin type because wrinkles tend to appear later in oily skin. The oil keeps moisture from evaporating by forming a seal over the skin.

Skin oiliness is determined by genes and it can be increased by a hot, humid climate and a diet rich in fats and oils. Also, some ethnic groups are more prone to it, for example people from Mediterranean countries.

Oily skin needs thorough but gentle cleansing morning and evening; good moisturisers with SPF during the day and a night cream ideally formulated to regulate oil production. Gentle exfoliating products like AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids) or enzyme peels rather than aggressive scrub ones help improve skin texture.
